about

When I was a little kid, I had a dream that I was 65 years old, and the devil appeared to tell me that smoking was bad. More recently, I saw a friend smoking Lucky Strikes, which was a brand I assumed was long out of production. These things inspired this song.

lyrics

I wandered through another dream, as I often do,
and you were there aloft, barely in the room
that I left behind at midnight, as my eyes succumbed to gloom,
and from your plume you took

Another hit off that Lucky Strike
Death comes at midnight

Beauty queens on magazines, asking for light
and you were there in print, a creature of the night.
Looking at the mess we’re in, hearing echoes from Berlin,
and love from both sides now.

I recall the elegance of cigarettes,
when smoke was style, in your face at dinner time.
Now the smokers are in exile.
Asking for a light on a cold winter night

Give me a hit off that Lucky Strike
Death comes at midnight

Like the voice from a golden throat,
that had smoked all of her decades,
as it descends from sultry evenings,
down through darkened rooms,
to land in a well-lit deadly croak.
